Onyx Coffee Lab Completes Successful Factory Acceptance Testing at Diedrich

The Onyx Coffee Lab team recently joined us at Diedrich’s manufacturing facility in Ponderay, Idaho, for Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of their new DR-140 commercial roasting system.

The testing successfully combined equipment verification, production roasting, sensory evaluation, and collaboration between the Onyx Coffee Lab and Diedrich teams.

Putting the System Through Its Paces

Factory Acceptance Testing gives customers the opportunity to operate and evaluate their equipment before it leaves our facility. Working side by side, Jed Honderich, head of roasting and QC from Onyx Coffee Lab and the Diedrich team verify system operation, review controls and processes, test under production conditions, and address questions in real time. This allowed our team and the customer to identify and make any final adjustments while the roaster is still on site.

For Onyx, that meant doing what matters most: roasting coffee.

Over the course of the FAT, the team roasted several bags of coffee, giving them the opportunity to work directly with the equipment and evaluate its performance across multiple roasts. The evaluation did not stop when the coffee left the cooling tray.

From the Roaster to the Cupping Table

After roasting, the Onyx and Diedrich teams cupped the coffee together, connecting roast data and system performance with the finished cup. Jed also invited Grayson and Rachel Lore of Lore Coffee to join the cupping and take part in the FAT process, adding another experienced perspective to the evaluation.

The tasting created an opportunity to discuss roast development, system operation, and how the DR-140 will support Onyx’s production goals.

For this FAT, the Onyx team arrived with a master sample and a clear target: replicate their established roast profile on the new DR-140. Jed Honderich successfully matched that profile and validated the results through cupping.
